WCA_MentorProgram_color“Dear Mentors, I’d like to switch directions in my communications career and I’m sure that my experience and skills will cross over. Then I read the job ads, and I’m not so sure. Everything seems so specific. How do I convince a prospective employer that I’ll be a good fit?”

If you are looking to test the waters with your new direction, finding a related volunteer opportunity with WCA or another organization might be a low-risk way to see if you enjoy it. You can then add this new experience or skills to your resume and LinkedIn so that you’ll appear more qualified for these very specific job postings. To gain further credibility you might also see if someone who appreciated your volunteer work will write a LinkedIn recommendation for you. – Amy Hufford

First I would identify what skills do cross over and be able to explain how they do so to employers in your cover letter and in interviews. And if many of the jobs you want ask for skill sets you don’t have, consider either adding those skills or looking at different types of jobs. Many skills are transferable, but some skills are so specific that you really must be able to show employers you have the experience. I’d highly recommend a visit with a career counselor to help with these issues. – Liz Carmack

Most skills have a broad range of applications. Rather than recounting your responsibilities on your résumé, list your accomplishments and how they related to your skills. For example, “Wrote copy for a variety of marketing vehicles that contributed to a 20% increase in sales leads…” or “Used public relations experience to help successfully launch three new products…” – Maura Thomas
