Communications Committee

Led by the VP of Communications, Jennifer Rios

 
Communications Committee Member

Communications Committee members assist with efforts that help communicate the value and work of WCA. This includes help with newsletters, blog posts, graphic design, and social media outreach.

  • Time commitment: 2–3 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Experience with Canva and/or Mailchimp is a plus
 
Newsletter Contributor

Assist with the production of WCA emails and the monthly newsletter.

  • Time commitment: 1–2 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Canva and Mailchimp experience are a plus
 
Graphic Designer

Help with the design and development of graphics for events, social media, and the newsletter.

  • Time commitment: 1–2 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Canva experience is key for this role

Hospitality & Member Experience Coordinator

Help create a welcoming and memorable experience for attendees by greeting guests, assisting with networking, supporting speaker hospitality, and ensuring members feel engaged throughout each event.

  • Time commitment: 2–4 hours per event
  • Skills helpful: Customer service, hospitality, networking, or event experience.
 
Registration & Check-In Coordinator

Manage attendee check-in, verify registrations, welcome guests, and help ensure a smooth and organized arrival experience for every event.

  • Time commitment: 2–4 hours per event
  • Skills helpful: Organization, attention to detail, customer service, or event experience.
 
Event Engagement & Photography Coordinator

Capture photos and memorable moments throughout each event while encouraging attendee engagement. Help document speakers, networking, and key highlights to share with the Communications team after the event.

  • Time commitment: 2–4 hours per event
  • Skills helpful: Photography (professional or smartphone), creativity, social engagement, or event experience.

 

Get Smart Conference Committee

Led by the VP of Special Programs – Get Smart, Jackie Sinex

Get Smart is WCA’s annual professional development conference. Event day is October 16. We need support in the months leading up to the event and on the day itself.

 

Catering Coordinator

Coordinate quotes from catering vendors, secure the food order, and manage coffee and lunch delivery on event day.

  • Time commitment: 2–5 hours per month (varies by phase)
  • Skills helpful: Vendor coordination or event experience
 
Sponsorship Liaison

Help identify and reach out to potential sponsors, and coordinate with the VP of Sponsorships to finalize conference sponsors.

  • Time commitment: 2–5 hours per month (varies by phase)
  • Skills helpful: Fundraising or sales experience helpful

 

Communications Liaison

Support outreach and promotion efforts for the conference, serving as a communications point of contact for the committee.

  • Time commitment: 2–3 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Communications or marketing experience
 
Event Setup Volunteer

Help set up the venue space on event day, October 16.

  • Time commitment: Event day only
  • Skills helpful: No experience necessary — just a willingness to help!

 

After-Party Coordinator

Coordinate the conference after-party meet up venue and welcome guests on arrival. (Not a large party-planning lift.)

  • Time commitment: 1–2 hours per month leading up to the event
  • Skills helpful: Event planning experience a plus

 

Banner Brunch Committee

Led by the VP of Special Events – Banner Brunch, Sarah Parker

Banner Brunch is WCA’s signature spring celebration. We’re looking for both committee chairs and general committee members across the following areas. All committee members are asked to help bring in at least two sponsorships for the event.

 

Sponsorships Chair

Support the VP of Sponsorships in securing Banner Brunch sponsorships at all levels.

  • Time commitment: Varies; 2-5hrs/month estimated 
  • Skills helpful: Fundraising, sales, and/ or communications experience

 

Logistics Chair

Coordinate A/V, volunteers, and caterers; assist with all on-the-ground coordination on the day of the event, including managing registration.

  • Time commitment: 1-2hrs/month leading up to event; significant day-of commitment
  • Skills helpful: Event coordination and logistics experience

 

Décor Chair

Handle floral arrangements and take ownership of all WCA materials, including the step-and-repeat, gift bags, and other décor elements. Responsible for setting up decor day-of. 

  • Time commitment: 1-2hrs/month leading up to event; significant day-of commitment
  • Skills helpful: Eye for design and event styling

 

Silent Auction Chair

Oversee the silent auction from item donation and platform setup through pickup of material goods and distribution to winners.

  • Time commitment: Varies; 2-5hrs/month estimated 
  • Skills helpful: Project management; experience with auction platforms a plus

 

Financial Chair

Help the Treasurer manage Banner Brunch–specific finances.

  • Time commitment: Varies; 2-5hrs/month estimated 
  • Skills helpful: Finance or accounting experience preferred

 

General Banner Brunch Committee Volunteers

Not ready to chair a committee? We welcome volunteers to serve in a support role on any of the above committees. Every extra set of hands makes Banner Brunch possible.


 

Membership Committee

Led by the VP of Membership, Cathy Edison

 
Member Database Coordinator

Manage the review and removal of expired members from MembershipWorks, Slack, and the Forum at the beginning of each month. Conduct a full audit and cleanup at the end of the year and again in May before the June board transition.

  • Time commitment: 30 minutes–1 hour per month
  • Skills helpful: CRM or list management experience

 

Membership Ambassador

Attend WCA events with a tablet or laptop to check in attendees and share membership resources with non-members at check-in.

  • Time commitment: Approximately 4 hours most months; 6–8 hours each during Get Smart Conference and Banner Brunch
  • Skills helpful: Basic Google Sheets or Excel data entry

 

Recruitment Committee

Led by the VP of Recruitment, Maya Walker-Reich

 

Happy Hour Chair

Supports the VP of Recruitment in leading the monthly Happy Hour from start to finish. Happy Hours are held the first Wednesday of every month from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Scouts and confirms venues, coordinates date and details with the venue, secures potential happy hour deals or perks with venues exclusively for WCA members, manages the event RSVP page, shows up early to set the welcoming tone, hosts and greets members and guests, writes the LinkedIn recap, promotes the event on their personal LinkedIn page, and sends the follow-up email afterward. Our August Happy Hour will be held at Kendra Scott for our annual Kendra Gives Back event, raising money for WCA.

  • Time commitment: Approximately 8 to 10 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Hospitality, event coordination, relationship building with venues

 

Morning Mingle Chair

Supports the VP of Recruitment in leading the Morning Mingle series. Morning Mingles are held the last Friday of every month from 9 to 10:15 a.m., currently hosted at BookPeople. Scouts and confirms venues suited for a daytime, lower-key format, manages logistics and RSVPs, hosts and welcomes attendees, writes the recap post, promotes the event on their personal LinkedIn page, and sends follow-up communication.

  • Time commitment: Approximately 6 to 8 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Hospitality, event coordination, comfort with morning/daytime networking formats

 

Partnerships & Community Outreach Chair (up to 2 volunteers)

Supports the VP of Recruitment in building and growing WCA’s presence across Austin. Leads cold outreach to new Austin venues for future Happy Hours and Morning Mingles, and nurtures existing venue relationships for repeat bookings. Researches and identifies relevant networking events, conferences, and community gatherings where WCA could have a presence, coordinates securing a table or sponsorship spot at those events, and represents WCA on-site to talk with attendees and recruit new members. Collaborates with other Austin organizations on co-hosted events and cross-promotion opportunities to expand WCA’s reach. Promotes upcoming events on their personal LinkedIn page.

  • Time commitment: Approximately 10 to 12 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Sales or outreach experience, relationship management, networking, comfort representing WCA one-on-one with strangers

 

Holiday Party Chair (up to 2 volunteers)

Supports the VP of Recruitment in planning WCA’s annual Holiday Party, held Wednesday, December 2nd at Chez Zee. Helps with decor planning and setup, securing sponsors and in-kind donations, and promoting the event through social posts, LinkedIn announcements, and member outreach to drive attendance.

  • Time commitment: Approximately 4 to 6 hours per month leading up to the event, increasing closer to December
  • Skills helpful: Event styling, sales or outreach experience, social media or content creation experience

 

Sponsorships & Fundraising Committee

Led by the VP of Sponsorships, Kaci Baez

 
Sponsorships & Fundraising Committee Member

Help advance the mission of WCA by engaging in fundraising activities to cover operating costs, grants, and funds. Generate lists of targeted potential supporters and event sponsors and assist with donor outreach and follow-up.

  • Time commitment: 3–8 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Fundraising, communications, public relations, nonprofit, advertising, or sales experience

 

Finance Committee

Led by the Treasurer, Natalie Choate

 
Finance Committee Member

Help keep WCA financially strong by reviewing the budget, monitoring financial performance, and planning for the organization’s long-term financial future. This committee is a great fit for people with finance or accounting experience, as well as anyone who wants to build their financial knowledge while supporting WCA’s mission.

  • Time commitment: 4–5 hours per month
  • Skills helpful: Experience with Excel and/or QuickBooks preferred

 

Scholarship Committee

Led by the VP of Philanthropy, Jennifer Long

 
Scholarship Application Reviewer

Help pave the way for students pursuing communications-related degrees and careers. Your involvement will include reviewing scholarship applications and conferring with fellow committee members to determine two scholarship award recipients, who will be announced at Banner Brunch in spring 2027.

  • Time commitment: 4–6 hours during scholarship season, beginning in early 2027
  • Skills helpful: No specific experience required

 

Peer Mentorship Program

Led by the VP of Professional Development, Vivvi Britton

 
Peer Mentor

Peer mentors provide one-on-one guidance to members and nonmembers, helping women in — or aspiring to join — the communications and marketing field build job search skills, navigate career transitions, manage challenging work environments, and more. Mentors share career insights, feedback, and encouragement to support the growth of women in our community.

  • Time commitment: 2–4 hours per month
  • Skills required: Professional experience in communications or marketing, whether at a brand, agency, or in a freelance or consulting capacity. Strong communication skills and a genuine interest in supporting others’ growth. Must be a WCA member.
