UnknownWe all in some way, shape or form have a natural desire to succeed in life. This is particularly true when it comes to our occupation. The road to success is not easy, however. Instead, we must forge ahead blazing our own trail by adapting to a path that is, at times, full of uncertainty, disappointment or even failure. WCA Member and Communications Committee volunteer, Victoria Williams, shares her personal story on facing career setbacks and how she overcame them:

Experiencing a setback in the workplace is never pleasant. It can even be devastating to some and severely affect one’s self-esteem. But it is key to achieving success. I know this because I personally faced work-related obstacles at the end of 2012 shortly after relocating to Austin from New Jersey for a career opportunity that didn’t pan out as originally planned.

After the initial shock of what had happened had worn off, reality set in. And I was suddenly very aware that I was thousands of miles away from home and without the support of family and friends. My networking circle was limited too! This was because I knew very few people. But I was determined to stay the course, so I set out to find new opportunities by becoming more involved in community. And my efforts paid off because I found my way to Women Communicators of Austin!

As of WCA member, I’ve had to opportunity to meet a lot of gifted and talented women and expanded my networking circle tenfold! The experience of serving as a contributing writer for the communications committee, as well as taking on the role of PR Chair for the group has strengthened my leadership skills and opened my eyes to lots of new opportunities. It has even inspired me to pursue a Certification in Nonprofit Management and Leadership!

Here are some things you can do while transitioning back into the workforce after a experiencing a setback in your career:

  • Get Involved. Dedicating your time and talents to organizations that support causes you’re passionate about or interested in can be very rewarding. There are many benefits, as well. It provides the perfect environment for you to network with like-minded folks while bettering the community!
  • Find a Staffing Agency/Freelance. Doing freelance work allows you to set your own pay rate and implement a flexible work schedule. Staffing agencies work to place their employees in positions that highlight their strengths and present them in a positive light, while meeting the needs of clients. They pay pretty well, too! Both are great options for anyone who is in-between jobs or, even, those looking to supplement their income. WCA’s special interest group, Freelance Austin, is one of the best resources for freelancers in the region. It is one of the many perks of WCA membership!
  • Network. Professional success is influenced by our ability to get to know others, proving that the age-old adages such as this one rings true: Success is measured by Who you know, rather then What you know!

The bottom line is this: Our careers sometimes experience unexpected wrinkles that impact their direction. It is just the natural order of things. Don’t let it keep you from growing, both personally and professionally. And, remember, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again!
