WCA members worked alongside 200 other volunteers this past Saturday to help make GENaustin’s We Are Girls Conference a smooth and successful event. “[GENaustin’s] mission of empowering young girls fits very nicely with our organization. As we strive to empower women in the communications field and encourage leadership, GENaustin seems like a natural fit for us to support similar local nonprofits [with the same mission]” says WCA President Elect, Lisa Elmore.
In preparation for the conference, WCA members received volunteer training to best serve the conference. “It is incredibly important to us as an agency that our volunteers feel like they are part of the GENaustin community. We focus on supporting and educating volunteers so that when they arrive at [the conference], they are knowledgeable, confident, and feel connected to the mission” says Brittany Yelverton, GENaustin Volunteer Manager.
The conference targets girls age 8-18, as well as their parents, supervisors and educators. The conference had several dynamic speakers present as well as 45 hands-on workshops for attendees to choose from. Yelverton says: “Our hope, and the outcome in the past, is that both the girls and volunteers who attend the conference leave We Are Girls having gathered new information, resources, and support, all while spending time connecting with and strengthening a community committed to girl’s empowerment.”
