WCA Casts a Wider Net for Students

By Samantha Furry

2013 marks the year that Women Communicators of Austin hoisted its anchor and set coordinates for uncharted territory. Untethered and nimble, WCA is now able to grow and adapt to best meet the needs of members and the communications community in Austin. Central Texas college students will also begin to notice these differences.

No longer confined to a chapter-based structure, the WCA student membership program is expanding its reach to new universities and colleges, including: Huston-Tillotson University, St. Edward’s University and Austin Community College. Additional programming – tailored to strengthen professional development and community – will be offered.

Here are a few developments WCA students can expect to see:

College Over Coffee – the student version of the WCA program Careers Over Coffee – will be held monthly and invites students hoping to gain insight from professionals and fellow students through a moderated discussion in a relaxed environment. Additionally, the popular Speed Mentoring events will return. Held once each semester, this event caters to students looking to pick the brains of professional communicators and get a sense for what they can learn from a mentor. It’s also the perfect opportunity for professionals to become more familiar with mentoring students.

To promote these new programs, boost awareness and share student-focused content, WCA is extending its social media presence. Students can soon follow WCA Students on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Communications students can source and exchange relevant and engaging news, helpful tips, networking events and professional development opportunities.

While new changes and undefined territory can cause uncertainty, WCA navigates the way with its members in mind; both student and professional. The coming year will be a chance to stretch the sails, test the waters and discover what’s just beyond the horizon.
