AWC Austin’s Leader Lunch with Kat Jones of Milkshake Media taught me several things. Since we all love roundups, here are Kat’s four rules:

  1. Show up
  2. Pay attention
  3. Tell the truth
  4. Don’t get attached to the outcome

Showing up is the first step, but Kat stressed the importance of being open and aware of potential opportunities (that’s where rule #2 comes into play). Her career has had its share of serendipitous moments because she chose to pay attention to them. Telling the truth is part of being a decent human being, and you can’t get anywhere without it. And finally, do your best on a professional level but remain uninvested on a personal level.

AWC Austin’s Leader Lunches provide opportunities for members to connect with leading communications professionals. Held several times a year, these popular sponsored lunches provide a small group setting to create informal conversation. For members, the lunches provide rare opportunities to meet and learn from women who have achieved outstanding accomplishments in their fields and made lasting contributions to their local community. Past Leader Lunches have featured Patsy Woods Martin, Tela Goodwin Mange, Patti Smith, Melinda Garvey, Teresa Henderson and Ronne Rock.
