2025 Julie Tereshchuk Scholarship Application

  • Eligibility

    To be considered for the WCA Julie Tereshchuk Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements: Full-time student currently enrolled with a minimum of 12 hours; minimum GPA of 3.0; completed minimum of 30 hours of coursework; demonstrated career commitment in communications or media; and enrolled in a Central Texas college or university.* If selected as a scholarship finalist, you may be asked to produce a transcript and confirm class enrollment. *Central Texas college or university is defined as being located in the 10-county Capital region in Central Texas including Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Fayette, Hays, Lee, Llano, Travis and Williamson Counties.

  • Please provide a list of your communications-related coursework, activities and volunteer roles to date.
  • Include details such as the organization or event name, your role or responsibilities, and any specific achievements or contributions you made. Feel free to include extracurricular activities, community service, or leadership roles in clubs, sports teams, or student organizations that demonstrate your commitment, initiative, and skills.
  • Include the name of the award, the organization or institution that granted it, and the year it was awarded. You may also include any distinctions such as Dean's List, honor roll, scholarships, or subject-specific awards.
  • Essay (500 word max)

    Please describe the challenges you have faced in pursuing your college education and your career in communications. What has your path to higher education looked like? Why are you drawn to a career in the communications field? The WCA awards the Julie Tereshchuk Scholarship annually to at least one deserving undergraduate student. In your essay, help us understand your personal journey and the reasons why you require financial assistance to achieve your career goals. Your essay must include a statement of financial need.

  • Letter of Recommendation (500 word max)

    A letter of recommendation is required from either a college or university faculty member, a professional reference, or another relevant individual who can speak to the applicant’s qualifications. The recommender should provide a specific example demonstrating the applicant’s potential as a promising young communicator. The letter must be submitted directly to the scholarship committee at scholarships@wcaustin.org by the deadline of February 21, 2025. While only one letter is required, additional letters of recommendation may be submitted.
  • This may include personal achievements, challenges you’ve overcome, special skills or experiences, or any other factors that demonstrate your qualifications and commitment to your academic and career goals. Feel free to share anything you believe would help the committee better understand your application.

Scholarship Application Scoring Breakdown:

    • Essay: 25 points
      Your essay will be evaluated based on clarity, relevance, and overall quality of writing.
    • Recommendation Letter: 20 points
      A strong letter of recommendation will demonstrate your character, accomplishments, and potential for success.
    • Relevant Activities and Involvement: 20 points
      Points will be awarded based on your participation in extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and community service.
    • Academics and Awards: 15 points
      Your academic achievements, including awards, honors, and other recognitions, will be considered.
    • Financial Need: 10 points
      Demonstrating financial need is an important component of the application.
    • GPA: 5 points
      Your grade point average will be factored into the overall scoring.
    • Supplemental Information: 5 points
      Any additional information, such as special skills or personal circumstances, that may enhance your application will be taken into account.
