The Association for Women in Communications is more than just a professional organization. It is a  group of smart women who help one another whenever possible, both professionally and personally. Across the nation and Central Texas, AWC members are my colleagues, long-time friends and soon-to-be-made friends. That’s why it was so very meaningful to stand up in front of my peers and accept the AWC Austin Chapter Member of the Year Award last spring at Banner Brunch.

In January 2010, Lisa Maxwell shared with me that I’d been nominated for this award and that the previous 10 award winners had all endorsed my nomination. I was blown away. So, when I accepted the award, I shared 10 life lessons or life-changing moments all associated with AWC Austin in honor of the women who nominated me. I just couldn’t believe that many people had taken the time to think about me, my career and my service to AWC Austin and my profession.

So, who are you going to nominate this year? Choose someone you’ve always admired from near or far or someone who helped you in your career flourish. If you don’t think you have enough time to submit a nomination, then compare notes with a friend and co-write a nomination. I know you will be glad you did.
