Each month AWC will feature a shining star from one of our local Austin student chapters. This month we highlight Alexis Guerrero, Vice  President for the Texas State University Student Chapter.

AWCAustin: Tell me about your background, where did you grow up and how did you land at TX State?
AG:
I grew up in the small town of George West, TX and the first of my family to attend college. I knew I didn’t want to be too far from my family, but I wanted to be far enough to have some independence. I visited San Marcos back in high school and I just fell in love with the Texas State campus. I knew I would never gain the ‘freshman 15’ with these stairs and hills. It just seemed like the perfect school for me because even though it was in a bigger city, it still had a small-town feel.

AWCAustin: What are you studying and why?
AG:
I’m studying Public Relations. I had a little trouble deciding what I wanted to do, but Public Relations just fit me. I am definitely a people person and although I get a little intimidated talking in front of a crowd, I still enjoy it. I really want to go into the party planning aspect though. I think I would really enjoy creating big events.

AWCAustin: When did you join AWC and what has it meant to you so far?
AG:
I joined AWC in the fall of my sophomore year. Last semester I was the Membership Chair and this semester I’m Vice President. Being in AWC has meant a lot to me, not only have I made new friends, but I get to work with actual business women. I love being able to see how it is in the real world.

AWCAustin: Is there anything special you take away from AWC over other organizations you may or may not belong to?
AG:
AWC isn’t just work, it’s a family. We have a great group of girls and the meetings are fun and interesting. I don’t think members of other organizations can receive compliments such as, “I like your shoes” on a daily basis. The professional members are also there to help. I have never had trouble getting a contact.

AWCAustin:Any advice or tips for new student members?
AG:
My advice for new members is don’t just attend meetings, get involved. It is more meaningful and exciting to work on an AWC project or attend an AWC event.

AWCAustin: Tell me your favorite part about living in Central Texas.
AG:
I love San Marcos! There is plenty to do, which is a big change from my hometown. I’m never bored because this city never sleeps.
