In an effort to better tailor the mentor program to fit the unique needs of student mentees, we collaborated with the student chapter presidents and a handful of student members to develop a structure that would allow for more compatible pairings and freedom in seeking advice from potential mentors. An idea for a speed mentoring emerged!

The inaugural AWC Austin Speed Mentoring event held Monday, October 29th was a huge success

The inaugural AWC Austin Speed Mentoring event held Monday, October 29th welcomed eager student members and professional member mentors to Waterloo Ice House in Southpark Meadows. In three 15-minute intervals, students were able to meet with a new mentor whom they could ask questions from, learn a bit about their background and exchange contact information.

While the sessions lasted just minutes, the intimate structure allowed for students to come away with in-depth advice for seeking internships, staying calm in the midst of graduation and affirming they are on the right track. For many students, this is a first time to meet with a professional and test the mentorship waters. Emily Jimenez, a junior at UT studying broadcast journalism, found potential mentors in the mix. “I met with two journalists and a woman who started her own business. Afterwards, I felt like these were women I could go to for additional advice. It was fun!”

Any and all professionals can provide valuable guidance regardless of occupation or experience

An added benefit of this event is that it teaches professional members that anyone can be a mentor. Having navigated the same paths these students are on, any and all professionals can provide valuable guidance. Occupations and interests have much less weight when mentoring students who are chiefly concerned with finding the right internship, building their confidence and seeking a reliable and kind ear.

The next speed mentoring event will be held Monday, November 12th at Red’s Porch from 6 to 8 p.m.

Interested professional members can register to become a mentor and contact Samantha Furry (smfurry@gmail.com // 512.217.6730) to reserve a spot in the professional mentor line-up! Texas State student chapter members can also contact Samantha Furry to reserve their spot while UT student chapter members should contact Amy Prince at amyprince512@yahoo.com.
