by Elizabeth Christian
The year 2005 was a big year for me and for my company. Elizabeth Christian & Associates Public Relations was celebrating 10 years in business, and I was lucky enough to be named Outstanding Austin Communicator by AWC Austin.
I remember sitting in the sunny banquet room at the awards luncheon and thinking to myself, “Does it get any better than this?” That day was a real watershed moment for me—since it is an award granted by peers, it was a real validation that ECPR was here to stay and that I was doing at least a passable job as its president. The award marked my entry into a very special group that includes Judy Maggio and so many other extraordinary women.
The honor of this award brings a responsibility with it on which I did not focus at the time. That responsibility is shared by all of us who’ve been fortunate enough to win. We must find a way to pay it forward, to mentor young women, to ensure that woman-owned businesses always make up at least 50 percent of companies in Central Texas.
One way to do that is to nominate deserving women communicators for this year’s Outstanding Austin Communicator award. The honor does indeed recognize its winners past, but it also sets that woman on a course for a future that is even richer than she might have imagined.
