Have you applied for AWC Austin’s student scholarship? Click here and do so today!
Next April, AWC Austin will host its annual Banner Brunch & Silent Auction. A highlight of the celebration is recognizing the accomplishments of student communicators. Each year, AWC Austin awards at least one Jo Caldwell Meyer Scholarship to a deserving undergraduate from a Central Texas college or university.
In a time when the cost of a quality education is increasing, it may be comforting to know resources like AWC Austin’s Jo Caldwell Meyer Scholarship Fund helps exemplary student communicators become outstanding professional communicators. The chapter is now accepting applications for two, $3,500 scholarships it will award in April. Download an application, or encourage students you know to apply. Deadline to submit is Jan. 21, 2011.
The winners exemplify the professionalism and astuteness of the scholarship’s namesake who served for 24 years as the National Executive Secretary of Theta Sigma Phi, the professional society for women in communications. Meyer began her work at the University of Texas at Austin’s School of Journalism as an Administrative Assistant. She served as Executive Assistant of the School of Communication until she retired in 1965. In her role, she was a friend and resource to many, including journalist Bill Moyers and Walter Cronkite. Meyer’s family remembers it being “perfectly normal” for Cronkite to call and chat. Meyer passed away in the fall of 2001 at the age of 91. The chapter dedicated the scholarship in her name in the following spring.
Though Meyer was a faithful AWC member, those who apply for her scholarship do not have to be members of AWC. If you are a fulltime student pursuing a degree in the field of communications, take the time to apply for this prestigious scholarship.
