This month’s featured student is B Barnett, a senior at Texas State University. B graduates in December with a Bachelors in Mass Communication – Public Relations and a minor in Leadership in Communication.

B is a statistics tutor at Texas State, a research intern for El Centro—Center for the Study of Latino Media  Markets and the social media and creative writing intern for Arsenal Brand, an advertising and PR boutique in Austin, TX.

In her spare time, B is an active member of several student organizations. She is the treasurer of the Texas State AWC student chapter, and was a founding member in 2009. She enjoys being a part of AWC because of the “strong support base” she’s developed with the other members. B said, “it’s easy to feel lost on a campus as large as Texas State, but if I need someone to talk to, I know I can turn to the friends I’ve met in AWC.”

B is also the president of the Texas State Social Media Club. SMC is an international organization that connects media makers from around the world to advance media literacy, promote industry standards, encourage ethical behaviour and share the lessons they have learned. SMC has over 200+ chapters around the world, including one in Austin, and a handful of student chapters. B formed Texas’ first ever student chapter this year, because “it’s important for students to develop a network and start the job search now.”

To close, I asked B what advice she would give incoming college freshmen. She said:

“Do something that makes you stand apart. It’s not enough to just have a Bachelors degree. Join organizations, get involved and build a resume that says you’re driven and you’ve done important things.”
