In 2002, Julie took a leap off a cliff, landed intact, and has gone on to become an award-winning freelance magazine writer and book editor. In November 2014 she took on her current role as Editor-in-Chief of Texas Lifestyle Magazine, a quarterly print and daily online publication.

Prior to becoming a professional wordsmith, and after relocating to the USA in 1990, Julie had a successful sales career with a Canadian software and technology services company. The UK native worked as a project planner in the manufacturing industry before her transatlantic move.

Julie is a graduate of the University of Bradford, with a degree in European Studies (German/Economics), and attended the University of Hamburg during her junior year.

Together with her husband, Trevor Richards, Julie is a member of the Paramount Theatre’s Century Club, KUT Radio’s Leadership Circle and Black Fret. The couple also supports many other local nonprofits including Mobile Loaves and Fishes, KLRU and the Austin Humane Society. She is president of the Metropolitan Breakfast Club, a past president of Women Communicators of Austin (2011-12) and a past president of Freelance Austin.

Julie resides in downtown Austin, Texas and enjoys maintaining close ties with friends and family in England, Scotland and Ukraine.

Best Mentee Fit:

Specific questions via email preferred. Limited availability to meet face-to-face with students, particularly journalism majors, although glad to offer opinions/advice to all comers, regardless of age and experience. Prefers short term rather than long term mentoring.
