Position Description:

Summary
The Director of Communications will help develop and lead the execution of a comprehensive communications strategy designed to keep the public, policymakers, media, supporters and donors informed, engaged, and motivated in our mission. This person will work with our policy, data and development teams as well as our strategic partners to strategically and tactically integrate messages across multiple channels.

Responsibilities
The Director of Communications’ responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
● Plan, investigate, draft, and refine content for Texas 2036 that promotes our policies, data, and mission in the most engaging ways
● Draft speeches and talking points, ranging from keynotes to monthly video newsletters
● Plan and execute media outreach strategies that develop relationships with reporters and producers across the state.
● Prepare our executives and policy and data team members for interviews
● Manage website, social media, email, advertising and action center mobilization programs including website maintenance and administration, developing and managing targeted social media advertising campaigns, and developing email programs that cultivate audience engagement and generate action
● Edit, fine-tune, bulletproof and spot-check communications
● Teach and encourage writing and communications best practices
● Perform other duties as assigned to help the organization achieve its long-term goals

Qualifications
The ideal Director of Communications candidate will have a combination of the following qualifications and experience:
● Experience writing for a newsroom, government agency, non-profit, public relations firm or political campaigns
● Experience with both traditional and digital media. Familiarity with WordPress, Mailchimp, social media, and digital media advertising preferred.
● Experience engaging and mobilizing audiences to donate and contact elected officials
● Excellent interpersonal skills, solid editorial judgment, and the ability to write quickly and concisely
● A passion for helping Texas to be the best place to live and work through our bicentennial and beyond
● Knowledge of Texas history, government, media, and culture preferred
● Excellent time management skills and ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities
● Highly motivated, entrepreneurial self-starter with a strong, positive, ‘can do’ attitude
● A bachelor’s degree, preferably in a writing-intensive discipline

Compensation and Benefits
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience. Location
The Director of Communications will be based out of Texas 2036’s Austin office and must be willing to travel as needed (up to 10% of the time) to cities across Texas for meetings with various stakeholders, including editorial boards, board members, stakeholders and colleagues.
