Having a professional headshot is a must in today’s business world. When you apply for jobs or when you network at business events, professionals usually will research you on business social media websites such as LinkedIn. Having a professional headshot speaks volumes of your personality and your professionalism. But how do you prepare for a headshot? You book your session, but now you must do some planning to do. What should you wear? How should you prepare?

I recently sat down with Phillinda Roy, of Phillinda Roy photography, a seasoned photographer with 17 years in the business, to discuss preparing for headshots. “A professional headshot is the perfect opportunity to show off your personality, so wear something that reflects you,” says Phillinda.

She offered a few tips for women and men, and some general things to think about before and after your session. Here are a few tips to help you feel prepared for your shoot:

Advice for women
– Wear bright colored blouses or medium range tones; stay away from white or black
– Wear jewelry, but nothing too big
– Have your hair done or nicely styled, don’t let hair cover your face
– Hire a stylist, if you are unsure of what to wear. You can also visit one at a local department store or boutique
– Have your make-up done or visit a make-up counter for a free makeup consultation; if you prefer to go natural, let your makeup artist know

Advice for men
– Wear bright colors, stay clear from white or black
– Look clean and professional
– Do not shave the day before or the day of the photo shoot; your pores will show
– If you have a beard, keep it but make sure it looks clean
– Look professional from the waist up, if you decide to wear jeans
– If you are an artist, you should still look professional but wear something that makes your look unique

When you arrive at the studio make sure you feel comfortable. Ask the photographer advice on how to pose. Bring extra clothes in case you have a spill or have to change. Sometimes we can spill coffee on our clothes and not be aware of it, or the background of the shoot may blend in with your colors. Also, don’t forget to smile and show off your teeth. If you wear braces and are uncomfortable, ask your photographer for about retouching. “When preparing for the headshot, also be mindful of who is paying for the photo,” says Phillinda. “If it’s your company, ask about their recommendations for appropriate attire.” “And remember, always ask your photographer questions.”

I hope these tips help you prepare for your next headshot.
