Do you know a communications student who could use $3,000?  WCA established its Jo Caldwell Meyer scholarship fund in 1989 and has since supported more than 30 Central Texas students with more than $45,000 in aid for college tuition, books and other academic needs. This year we are awarding two $3,000 scholarships at our May 2nd Banner Brunch.

Students attending any Central Texas college or university are encouraged to apply for the Jo Caldwell Meyer scholarship before February 27, 2015. Additional eligibility requirements include:

• Full-time student status, currently enrolled in Spring 2015 with a minimum of 12 hours
• Minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00
• Completed at least 30 hours
• Demonstrated career commitment in mass communications or media
• Both male and female students are eligible for this scholarship

Cassanda Jaramillo was one of last year’s two scholarship recipients. Cassandra was selected for her outstanding academic track record and her great dedication in pursuing multimedia journalism. The WCA scholarship is helping her complete her degree at the University of Texas. When she graduates, she plans to be a business or political reporter and hopes to eventually become the first Mexican primetime news anchor on a network. She has already interned with NBC – KXAN News, Beaumont’s CBS affiliate KFDM, and was a reporter at Texas Student Television’s Good Morning Texas.
Katy Schaffer was also one of last year’s scholarship recipients. She is pursuing a double major in public relations and journalism with a photojournalism concentration at The University of Texas. In addition to a great academic record, Katy stays busy pursuing her passions outside the classroom, including internships at Austin Monthly and SXSW. She also spent previous summers learning about public relations in Ireland and undertaking a five-week apprenticeship with photographer Dennis Darling in the Czech Republic. Katy aims to spend her career as a world-traveling communicator and visual storyteller.
