Julie BurchMeet Julie Burch. Having just joined Women Communicators of Austin in August, last year, Burch may be considered one of the group’s newer members. She’s no rookie communicator, though.

With more than two decades of experience under her belt, the veteran communicator first found her place in the nonprofit sector of the profession in the early 1980s working as a temp for the Museum of Photographic Arts based in San Diego, Calif.

“I felt like I had found the place where I fit … I just convinced them to hire me,” Burch said on a rainy evening during an interview by phone from her home, last week.

Burch, who grew up in Texas and has family in Houston, spent over a decade serving as Public Relations Director for the museum before deciding to relocate back home to Texas and landing the position of Marketing Director with Ballet Austin in the mid-1990s.

It was during this time that Burch, who started out as a dance major in school, found love.

Burch said she and her husband, Scott, initially met after high school though a mutual friend. The couple, who have been married for 17 years, reconnected after Burch returned home from California.

“He’s a great guy,” she said.

While the pair have no children of their own, Burch served as a “voice for children that didn’t have one,” while working as Director of Marketing & Public Relations at Austin Children’s Services.

” The mission is so compelling, helping kids that suffer from abuse and neglect really touches my heart in a way that really nothing else does.”

Burch’s talents extend far beyond her accomplishments in nonprofit communications, however.

From the winter of 2005 through the spring of 2009, she owned and operated her own jewelry design company called Julia Donelle Jewelry Design.

“I designed beaded jewelry and I worked primarily with gem stones, “she said.

Burch runs Julie Burch Consulting now, but she is really very passionate about conservation and would love to help preserve the environment in some way.

“I’m a tree lover in the biggest way.”
