Last Wednesday, ten AWC Austin members sat down to lunch with MP Mueller, president of Door Number 3 (DN3) and author of the New York Times blog, Branded. This event was part of our Leader Lunch series and offered an intimate setting for a handful of members to get to know a woman who has achieved outstanding accomplishments in advertising and made lasting contributions to the Austin community.

MP shared raw stories about finding her way to Austin (thanks to a positive tarot card reading), flunking out of a scientific pharmaceutical job and landing a gig in the company’s marketing department because her “just for kicks” rag magazine was actually pretty good, and finally choosing to set off on her own and start an advertising company. It couldn’t be that hard, right? DN3 has seen it’s fair share of ups and downs, including a rebranding and a “right-big” move from Elgin to Austin, but MP wouldn’t have it any other way.

My biggest take-away of the day is something very simple, yet, so important.

Take initiative and stand apart. Create your own opportunities.

This advice holds true for new grads, people changing jobs, and people who don’t want to feel stuck in their current position forever. In order to get a leg up, or land that dream job, you’ve got to make it happen for yourself. So get out there, and create new opportunities for yourself!

Hint: You can start by going to Banner Brunch and meeting some new people. I’ll be there!
